The short answer

A successful reefer movement needs the right product temperature, packing pattern, set point, ventilation, power continuity and monitoring response. The machinery cannot compensate for poor preparation.

Know the product condition before stuffing

Most reefers are designed to maintain temperature, not rapidly cool a warm load. Confirm the commodity’s required carriage temperature, acceptable range, humidity or ventilation needs and sensitivity to freezing or ethylene. Record pulp or core temperature where relevant. If product enters the container outside specification, the machine may run correctly while the cargo condition continues to deteriorate. Align harvest, processing, pre-cooling and loading teams around one temperature plan.

Airflow is part of the packaging design

Cold air usually moves through the T-floor and returns above the cargo. Packaging, pallet pattern and load height must preserve that path. Do not block floor channels, leave unstable voids or load beyond the marked limit. Carton vents should align with the intended airflow. For chilled products, the pattern often needs air to move through the load; frozen cargo may use a different approach. Use commodity guidance and specialist instructions rather than copying a previous load.

Set point is only one setting

In addition to temperature, a shipment may require fresh-air ventilation, humidity management, controlled atmosphere or specific defrost behavior. Confusing Celsius and Fahrenheit or entering a ventilation value in the wrong unit can be costly. Create a written setting instruction linked to the booking and verify it on the controller after power-up. Keep the instruction available to the origin depot, terminal, carrier and destination team.

Plan power, monitoring and response

Identify every period when the container depends on external power or a generator set: stuffing, road movement, terminal dwell, vessel transport and destination waiting. Monitoring is valuable only when an alarm reaches someone empowered to act. Define contacts, escalation time, product tolerance and decision authority. Keep pre-trip inspection records, set-point logs and event data. These records help separate product, packing, power and equipment causes if a deviation occurs.
